Wigley Guide

Looking for cottages with hot tubs in Wigley? This small Derbyshire village sits on the eastern edge of the Peak District, offering a perfect base for exploring both countryside and nearby cities like Sheffield (20 minutes) and Chesterfield (15 minutes).

Trip Advisor's top attractions near Wigley include Chatsworth House (4.5/5), Bolsover Castle (4.5/5) and the Heights of Abraham cable cars (4/5). The area's mining heritage runs deep - coal was first discovered here in 1368, though the industry has long since departed.

Cottage options range from cosy one-bedroom conversions to larger properties sleeping 8+. Many feature exposed beams, stone walls and wood-burning stoves alongside modern hot tubs. Several properties welcome dogs, making them ideal for walking holidays.

Self-catering accommodation gives you freedom to explore at your own pace while enjoying home comforts. The hot tub adds that extra touch - perfect after a day's hiking the nearby trails or exploring Derbyshire's many attractions.

Sightseeing

Wigley's location makes it brilliant for exploring the eastern Peak District. Chatsworth House (S44 5RW) sits just 8 miles away and opens 10am-5pm most days. This magnificent stately home earned 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor from over 9,000 reviews. The gardens alone are worth the trip - I recommend allowing at least 3 hours to see everything properly.

Bolsover Castle (S44 6PR) is even closer at just 5 miles from Wigley. English Heritage maintains this Stuart mansion which scores 4.5/5 from TripAdvisor users. Open 10am-5pm in summer and 10am-4pm winter, it's known for its Little Castle - a fantasy recreation of a medieval stronghold.

The Heights of Abraham (DE4 3NT) offers a cable car ride with stunning views across the Derwent Valley. It's about 20 miles from Wigley but worth the drive. TripAdvisor gives it 4/5 from 2,800+ reviews. The £20 ticket includes the cable car, cavern tours and exhibitions. We think it's good value for a full day out.

Pet Friendly

Dogs will love the walks around Wigley. The Linacre Reservoirs (S42 7JQ) offer three linked water bodies with woodland paths - perfect for morning walks. Dogs must stay on leads in some sections but can run free in others.

The Peacock at Barlow (S18 7SN) welcomes dogs in the bar area and garden. Their Sunday roasts are legendary locally. They provide water bowls and treats - just ask the staff who are always happy to accommodate four-legged guests.

Chatsworth Estate allows dogs in the garden (not the house) and across the parkland. The 1,000 acre park has plenty of space for dogs to explore. Remember to pack poo bags as the wardens are strict about cleaning up.

Many cottages in Wigley provide dog beds, bowls and even treats on arrival. Check if there's a secure garden before booking - it makes early morning and late night toilet trips much easier with your dog!

Top 3 attractions you have to see in Wigley

Linacre Reservoirs (S42 7JQ) offer three beautiful bodies of water surrounded by woodland. The 2-mile circular walk takes about an hour and suits all fitness levels. The paths are well-maintained though can get muddy after rain. The reservoirs were built between 1855 and 1904 and still supply water to Chesterfield. There's free parking but it fills quickly on summer weekends, so arrive before 10am.

Barlow Fishing Club (S18 7TR) runs several well-stocked ponds where day tickets are available (£8 adults, £5 juniors). Even if you've never fished before, it's a relaxing way to spend a few hours. The club shop rents basic equipment and sells bait. One visitor noted: "Caught 15 carp in 3 hours - best fishing I've had in years!"

The Hundall Circular Walk starts right in Wigley and takes you through beautiful countryside with views across to Chesterfield's crooked spire. The 4-mile route takes about 2 hours and includes some moderate hills. No special equipment needed beyond decent footwear. A local walker commented: "The views from the top field are worth every step of the climb."

What's the best time to visit Wigley?

May to September offers the most reliable weather. The bluebell woods at Linacre are spectacular in late April/early May. December is magical when Chatsworth House puts on its Christmas decorations.

Are there any good pubs within walking distance of Wigley?

The Peacock at Barlow is about a 25-minute walk. The Old Pump at Barlow is similar distance. Both serve excellent food and local ales. Book ahead for Sunday lunch at either - they get very busy.

Can I get around without a car?

It's difficult. The 16A bus runs from Chesterfield to Barlow (1 mile from Wigley) but only a few times daily. Taxis from Chesterfield cost around £15 each way. Having your own transport is strongly recommended.

Is there a shop in Wigley?

No. The nearest shop is Barlow Stores (S18 7SL), a mile away. For supermarkets, Chesterfield has Tesco, Sainsbury's and Morrisons, all about 5 miles from Wigley.

Will my mobile phone work in Wigley?

Coverage is patchy. EE and Vodafone work reasonably well. O2 and Three have very limited service. Most cottages offer WiFi, though speeds vary. Check with your host before relying on good connectivity.

What should I pack for my hot tub cottage break?

Extra towels for hot tub use (though some cottages provide these), flip-flops for going between cottage and tub and plastic glasses if you fancy a drink while soaking. Bring binoculars too - the stargazing from the hot tub on clear nights is fantastic!
