Hayfield Guide

Hayfield, a picturesque Peak District village, offers outstanding cottage holidays with hot tubs. Situated at the foot of Kinder Scout, it's the perfect base for exploring the national park while enjoying luxurious accommodation.

The village gained fame as the filming location for BBC's 'The Village' and was home to Arthur Lowe of Dad's Army fame. Nearby attractions include Kinder Scout (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor), Lantern Pike (4/5) and the stunning Sett Valley Trail (4.5/5).

Cottages range from cosy one-bedroom hideaways to large group accommodation sleeping 12+. Many properties feature private hot tubs, perfect for stargazing in this Dark Sky area after a day's hiking.

Self-catering gives you freedom to explore at your own pace, with excellent local pubs and shops nearby. Most cottages are dog-friendly too, ideal for bringing your four-legged walking companion.

Sightseeing

Hayfield sits at the western edge of the Peak District National Park, making it an excellent base for exploring this stunning region. The village itself has a rich history as a former mill town, with attractive stone buildings and a peaceful river running through it.

Kinder Scout (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor) is the must-visit attraction - this moorland plateau offers spectacular views and was the site of the famous 1932 Mass Trespass that helped establish our right to roam. The main trail starts right from Hayfield village.

The Sett Valley Trail (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor) provides an easy 2.5-mile walking/cycling route on a former railway line between Hayfield and New Mills. It's flat and accessible for all abilities.

History fans should visit St Matthew's Church (4/5 on TripAdvisor) in the village centre, parts of which date back to the 14th century. The nearby Snake Pass (SK22 1JA) offers some of the most dramatic driving routes in the Peak District.

Pet Friendly

Hayfield is a dog walker's paradise with miles of footpaths straight from your doorstep. Most local pubs welcome dogs, including The Royal Hotel (SK22 2JE) and The Sportsman Inn (SK22 2LE), both offering water bowls and treats.

The Sett Valley Trail is perfect for a gentle dog walk, while more adventurous hounds will love exploring Kinder Scout. Just be aware that ground-nesting birds mean dogs should be kept on leads in some areas during spring and early summer.

Hayfield's village shop stocks emergency pet supplies and there's a vet in nearby New Mills for any emergencies. I always recommend bringing your dog's bed from home to help them settle in your hot tub cottage quickly.

After muddy walks, many cottages provide outdoor taps and dog towels - check with your accommodation before booking. We've found most Hayfield cottages with hot tubs are also dog-friendly, but always confirm specific pet policies.

Top 3 attractions you have to see in Hayfield

1. Kinder Scout - This magnificent plateau stands at 636 metres and offers breathtaking views across multiple counties. The main route from Hayfield (known as William Clough) is challenging but rewarding. Pack proper boots and waterproofs as weather changes quickly. The site of the historic Mass Trespass is marked with a plaque and the moorland landscape feels otherworldly. One recent visitor wrote: "Tough climb but absolutely worth it for those views. We could see all the way to Manchester!"

2. Lantern Pike (SK22 2ES) - This distinctive hill (373m) provides a less strenuous walk than Kinder but still rewards with panoramic views. The circular route from Hayfield takes about 2 hours. The path passes through woodland and open moorland, with clear trails throughout. Walkers consistently praise the 360-degree views from the summit. Open all year, this walk is particularly stunning in autumn when the heather blooms.

3. Hayfield Village and Heritage Trail - Explore the village's fascinating history via the self-guided heritage trail (maps available from the visitor centre, SK22 2ES, open 10am-4pm weekends). The trail takes you past 20 points of interest including the site of the former railway station, ancient packhorse bridges and traditional weavers' cottages. The village's packhorse bridge dates from the 17th century and makes a great photo opportunity. Don't miss the chance to soak in your hot tub after completing the trail!

When is the best time to visit Hayfield?

Spring and early autumn offer ideal conditions for walking with moderate temperatures and fewer crowds. Summer brings longer days but busier trails. Winter can be magical with snow-capped hills, but some paths become challenging - your hot tub will feel especially wonderful after winter walks!

Do I need a car in Hayfield?

While not essential, a car is useful. Hayfield has bus connections to Buxton and Manchester (hourly service 358), but reaching more remote attractions is easier by car. Several cottages offer private parking.

Where can I buy groceries in Hayfield?

The village has a well-stocked Co-op (SK22 2LE, open 7am-10pm daily) plus a butcher and bakery. For larger shops, New Mills is 3 miles away with more options.

Are there good places to eat in Hayfield?

Yes! The Kinder Lodge (SK22 2HS) serves excellent locally-sourced food, while The Royal Hotel offers traditional pub meals. Pack Horse Inn (SK22 2ES) dates from 1626 and serves local ales and hearty food.

Is Hayfield suitable for children?

Absolutely. Younger kids will enjoy the playground in the recreation ground, while older children can tackle easier walks. The Sett Valley Trail is ideal for family cycling and many cottages provide games and entertainment.

How accessible is Hayfield for people with mobility issues?

The village has some steep sections, but the Sett Valley Trail offers accessible, flat walking. Some cottages provide ground-floor accommodation - check accessibility features when booking your hot tub cottage.
